Understanding Whiplash
Whiplash is a soft-tissue injury to the neck caused by a rapid, forceful back-and-forth motion of the neck — similar to the cracking of a whip. Most commonly associated with rear-end car accidents, whiplash can also occur from sports impacts, physical abuse, or other traumas. The injury affects the muscles, tendons, ligaments, and intervertebral discs of the cervical spine. Symptoms include neck pain and stiffness, headaches at the base of the skull, dizziness, blurred vision, shoulder and arm pain, and fatigue. Symptoms sometimes develop immediately but may not appear until 24 to 48 hours after the injury.
How Chiropractic Helps
Chiropractic care is one of the most effective treatments for whiplash injuries. The gentle, targeted adjustments used to treat whiplash restore normal cervical joint mechanics, reduce muscle guarding, and promote healing of damaged soft tissues. Research has shown that patients who receive early chiropractic care after a whiplash injury recover more quickly and are less likely to develop chronic symptoms. Chiropractors also address the cascade of secondary problems — including thoracic restrictions, shoulder tension, and headaches — that often follow a whiplash injury.
Why Early Treatment Matters
Many whiplash sufferers make the mistake of waiting to see if their symptoms resolve on their own. While mild cases may improve with rest, moderate to severe whiplash injuries that go untreated frequently progress to chronic pain syndromes that are far more difficult to treat. Getting evaluated and treated promptly — even if you feel only mildly sore — is the best way to protect your long-term health. We also work with auto insurance and can assist you in navigating the claims process.
