Vertigo

Vertigo — the sensation of spinning or dizziness — can be debilitating. Many cases have a cervical origin that responds well to chiropractic care.

Understanding Vertigo

Vertigo is the false sensation of spinning or movement — either of yourself or your surroundings. It can be brief and mild, or severe and prolonged enough to interfere with daily activities, driving, and work. The most common cause is benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), in which tiny calcium crystals in the inner ear become displaced and disrupt normal balance signals. Other causes include Meniere’s disease, vestibular neuritis, and cervicogenic vertigo — dizziness originating from dysfunction in the cervical spine. Vertigo is often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, balance problems, and difficulty with certain head movements.

How Chiropractic Helps

Chiropractic care is highly effective for two of the most common causes of vertigo: BPPV and cervicogenic vertigo. For BPPV, chiropractors are trained in the Epley maneuver and other canalith repositioning procedures — gentle head movements that guide the displaced calcium crystals back to their proper location in the inner ear. These procedures often resolve BPPV symptoms in just one or two treatments. For cervicogenic vertigo, upper cervical chiropractic adjustments restore normal joint motion in the neck, reducing the abnormal proprioceptive signals that the brain is interpreting as dizziness.

The Cervical Spine and Balance

The upper cervical spine plays a critical role in balance and spatial orientation. The joints and muscles of the neck contain a high density of proprioceptors — sensory receptors that tell the brain where the head is positioned in space. When the upper cervical joints are restricted or misaligned, these signals become distorted, and the brain may interpret the mismatch between the visual system, vestibular system, and proprioceptive system as dizziness or vertigo. Upper cervical chiropractic adjustments normalize these signals and can dramatically reduce or eliminate cervicogenic dizziness.
