Understanding Arm and Leg Pain

Arm and leg pain that radiates from the spine is caused by a condition known as radiculopathy — compression or irritation of a spinal nerve root. When nerve roots in the cervical spine are compressed, pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness can radiate down the arm into the hand and fingers. When lumbar or sacral nerve roots are affected, similar symptoms travel down the leg into the foot and toes. Radiculopathy is commonly caused by herniated discs, bone spurs, spinal stenosis, or joint inflammation. The pain may be sharp and shooting, or it may manifest as a persistent aching or burning sensation.
