Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome causes pain, numbness, and tingling in the hand and wrist — often interfering with work and daily activities.

Understanding Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) occurs when the median nerve, which runs through a narrow passageway in the wrist called the carpal tunnel, becomes compressed. This compression causes the hallmark symptoms of CTS: numbness, tingling, and pain in the thumb, index, middle, and part of the ring finger. Many sufferers notice symptoms most at night or first thing in the morning. As the condition progresses, hand weakness and difficulty gripping objects may develop. CTS is particularly common among people who perform repetitive hand and wrist movements, such as typing, assembly line work, or using vibrating tools.

How Chiropractic Helps

What many people don’t realize is that carpal tunnel symptoms are not always caused by compression at the wrist alone. The median nerve originates from the cervical spine (C6–T1), and compression anywhere along its path — including the neck, shoulder, elbow, or forearm — can produce identical symptoms. This is known as “double crush” syndrome. Chiropractic care evaluates the entire course of the median nerve and treats all areas of compression. Wrist and hand adjustments relieve local carpal tunnel pressure, while cervical and thoracic adjustments address any proximal nerve irritation that is contributing to symptoms.

Non-Surgical Treatment Options

Many patients diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome are offered a choice between wrist bracing, cortisone injections, or surgery — without being told about the evidence for conservative care. Chiropractic, combined with nerve mobilization techniques and soft-tissue therapy, has strong research support as an effective non-surgical treatment for mild to moderate CTS. Patients who pursue conservative care first often avoid surgery entirely, or experience significantly better surgical outcomes if surgery ultimately proves necessary.
